If you can learn how to use the gauges, the internet will tell you what your temperatures and pressures should be. At that point you can tell weather you should have a technician stop by or not!
You will put the red hose/gauge on the liquid line and the blue hose/gauge on the suction side
You can also put your thermometer in the return duct, write down the reading, then put it in the closest supply duct and write down that reading. Take the return reading minus the supply reading and if it is 20 degrees or more...that's pretty darn good!
