When we have a choice we prefer a rootop package unit. Unlike a split system these have both heating and cooling all in one box. There are many reasons we think these are better. In the southwest swamp coolers are still on the majority of homes and homeowners desire refrigerated cooling. These units can be installed right where these coolers are and hooked up to the same supply ductwork. A return duct can be cut-in and the job is done...simple. Even in new construction applications these are starting to be the preffered technique. They are installed outside so no mechanical closet is needed thus saving square footage.
To purchase these is more complicated for the unlicensed. You can purchase one through us and even get advice and help on installation. The number one thing to remember is they are very awkward and heavy, not easily put up on a roof. You can avoid the need to run a gas pipe by installing a heat pump, more on heat pumps here. These units require a 220Volt service disconnect and another 220Volt circuit if you require back-up strip heat.
